Grow gear warranties, decoded: what "5-year warranty" actually means.
Every grow brand prints a big warranty number on the box. Almost nobody reads what the number means. We did, brand by brand, terms pages and support reputations both, because a fan that dies in month 14 teaches you more about a company than any spec sheet. Here's the fine print, translated.
AC Infinity
THE STANDARD TO BEAT- The terms: 2 years standard across the line, 5 years on IONFRAME lights bought after July 2024. Repair or replace at their expense with prepaid return labels in the US. One catch: visible defects must be reported within 30 days of delivery.
- The reputation: the best in the category. Roughly 4.4 stars across 500+ Trustpilot reviews, with a recurring theme of fast, no-hassle replacements, sometimes honored even slightly past the warranty window.
- The fine print to know: forum reports suggest units bought through Amazon sometimes get more warranty friction than direct purchases. If you're buying AC Infinity for the warranty, buying direct is the safer registration path.
- What actually fails: WiFi dropouts on Controller 69 series units (often fixed by power-cycling) and app hiccups after updates. The metal, in fairness, mostly lasts.
Spider Farmer
READ YEAR ONE CLOSELY- The terms: "5-year warranty" on LEDs, but only year 1 is full coverage (free parts, repair, shipping). Years 2 through 5: you pay shipping, or they offer a discounted replacement instead. Tents get 1 year, accessories 2. Warranty is void for water damage, disassembly, or buying from unauthorized sellers, and it does not transfer if you sell the light.
- The reputation: the most polarized of the big four. Glowing reviews about named reps replacing gear within days sit next to documented cases of 20+ emails over six weeks without resolution.
- The practical catch: support is email only, on China business hours. If your light dies on a Friday night, you're writing a message and waiting.
Mars Hydro
THE ORDER-DATE CLOCK- The terms: 5-year limited on the main light lines. First 12 months fully free; years 2 through 5 are parts-only, and you pay repair and shipping. Two details that bite: the clock starts on your ORDER date, not delivery, and warranty parts have been reported at around 15 dollars shipping per piece with multi-week delivery from China.
- The reputation: around 4 stars on volume, but the unhappy stories follow a pattern: one-email-a-day support pace and refund processes that grind on for months. Their newer app ecosystem also reviews poorly (about 2.8 stars), with cloud-only control and single-session login.
- What actually fails: clip fans (sometimes within a couple of months) and LED drivers. Drivers are exactly the part you want covered cheaply, so the parts-only years matter here.
Vivosun
HIGH VOLUME, BOTH STORIES TRUE- The terms: most products 2 years, LED lights up to 5 total. Like AC Infinity, visible damage must be reported within 30 days of receipt. They list phone support with long stated hours, which is more than most.
- The reputation: nearly 10,000 Trustpilot reviews around 4 stars, full of genuinely happy replacement stories, while BBB and complaint-site records show the other tail: unanswered warranty emails and slow refunds. Both experiences are real; which one you get seems to depend on which queue you land in.
- App note: the GrowHub ecosystem reviews well for features but poorly for first-time pairing and for schedules occasionally not holding after updates.
TrolMaster
PRO GEAR, PRO ASSUMPTIONS- The terms: 3 years (1 year on sensor probes), with a stated 48-business-hour support response and actual phone hours. The catch nobody expects: the warranty is void if the unit is resold, so secondhand TrolMaster is uncovered TrolMaster.
- The reputation: solid, in pro circles, with the quirk that some of the liveliest support happens through their support Instagram account. Third-party "how to get TrolMaster support" guides exist, which tells you the official path can take patience.
The five questions to ask before any gear purchase
- Does the warranty clock start at order, delivery, or registration?
- Which years are FULL coverage versus parts-only-you-pay-shipping?
- Is there a 30-day window to report visible damage? (Open the box the day it arrives. Photograph everything.)
- Does buying from Amazon or a marketplace change the coverage versus buying direct?
- If it dies, is the replacement part shipping from a US warehouse or overseas?
The pattern across the whole industry: year one is usually honest. The number on the box is marketing. Judge brands by years two through five, and by how fast a human answers.
Stack the odds regardless of brand
Whatever you buy: photograph the unboxing, register direct on the brand site the day it arrives, keep the box for 60 days, and run new gear hard during its first month, because infant mortality in electronics shows up early and that's when your coverage is strongest. Replacement basics like clip fans, 15A smart plugs, and thermo-hygrometers are cheap enough to keep a spare of, which turns any warranty wait from a crisis into an inconvenience.
And whatever controller ecosystem you end up in, our free Control Room works alongside all of them: schedules, automation, and monitoring that stay yours even if a brand's cloud has a bad day.
